We are pleased to announce this new reading group, open to all staff and research students in the Department of Humanities at the University of Gloucestershire, and those affiliated to the Being Human Centre. The group will meet informally over a Wednesday lunchtime to read something very short (for example, an extract, an essay, a piece of work in progress, perhaps, or just a couple of pages of a text that someone can speak to) so that we can share responses and thoughts in our various ways. The aim is to explore issues of interdisciplinarity, as well as themes and issues, that bear on study within the Humanities (as well as the study of the human).
The first meeting was held on Wednesday, 24 Feb at 1.15 and discussed David Graeber’s piece, ‘Bullshit Jobs’. Graeber is a very fertile and original thinker, and an anthropologist and anarchist to boot. I provide the link: http://strikemag.org/bullshit-jobs/
The second meeting is scheduled for two weeks later on 9 March at 1.15. Suggested by Will Large, we will discuss a piece by the French philosopher, Gilles Deleuze: ‘Postscript on the Societies of Control’
Further meetings will follow and be publicised in due course.
